Houston Hurricane
The Houston Hurricane soccer team played their first game in the 1978 North American Soccer League (NASL) against the Los Angeles Aztecs and won 3-2. They inhabited the cavernous Astrodome, which made even their respectable four-figure crowds look miniscule. Although the win over LA was a good start to their season, the Hurricane sadly lost in the NASL American Conference Central Division with a 10-20 record.
In 1979, the team acquired Kyle Rote Jr. and Kai Haaskivi from the Dallas Tornado. Although the Houston Hurricane were much improved and earned a division title with a 22-8 record, they were beat out by the Philadelphia Fury in the 1979 playoffs. By 1980, the club announced they were officially closing.
