With definitely one of the most unique logos and gimmicks in sports history, the Canton Invaders sported a logo with a red and silver alien coming out of a soccer ball spaceship. And yes, there was a real-life mascot too.
The Canton (Ohio) Invaders began in 1984 and played in the American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA). During this time, a nearby team named the Cleveland Force were at the top of the rival Major Indoor Soccer League. Because of the Force’s success, the Canton Invaders mimicked the Force, including a similarly themed logo and mascot.
After the Force folded in 1998, the Invaders benefitted by poaching their head coach Timo Liekoski and won five AISA championships between 1985 and 1990 with two more Finals appearances to boot. By the mid-1990s the indoor soccer boom started to fade and with attendance lagging the Invaders would fold in 1997, but not before spending a final season in Columbus.
