Detroit Cougars
Formed in 1967, the Detroit Cougars were one of the founding members of the United Soccer Association (USA). Owned by Henry Ford’s grandson, William Clay Ford and Detroit Tigers owner John Fetzer, the USA imported European and South American teams in order to compete with the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL).The Cougars were unsuccessful on the field and in the box office during their two seasons. Their short-lived stint in pro soccer ended in September 1968.
